What are CS2 commends, and what do they actually do?

A commend is a small public compliment one Counter-Strike 2 player gives another after a match. They stack up as three counters on your CS2 profile — Friendly, Teacher and Leader — and anyone who looks at your profile can see them.
They are the opposite of a report. Reports are how the game records that someone was a problem; commends are how it records that someone was worth playing with.
The three types
You are not choosing a rating out of five. You are picking which of three things the player was, and you can pick more than one.
- Friendly — they were decent company. No rage, no griefing, no throwing because the first round went badly. This is the one people give most often.
- Teacher — they actually helped. Called out positions, explained a smoke, told you what you did wrong without being unpleasant about it.
- Leader — they ran the round. Made the calls, set the pace, and the team followed. The rarest of the three.
All three sit on your profile as separate totals, so a profile with a high Leader count reads differently to one with only Friendly.
Who can commend you
Only someone who was just in a match with you. That is the single rule that governs everything else about commends, and it is why you cannot simply be given them from outside the game.
It is also why every service that delivers commends — including this one — needs you to be connected to a server while they land. The accounts sending them have to be in the match with you at that moment. If you are sitting in the main menu, there is nowhere for them to go.
This is the step people miss. Commends are not sent to your account like a gift; they are given inside a match. No match, no commends.
What commends actually change
Being straight about this matters, because plenty of pages overpromise. Commends do not change your rank, they do not unlock anything, and they do not touch your inventory. They are a public signal, not a currency.
What they do change is how your profile reads. A profile with healthy commend counts and no report history looks like an account other people want in their lobby — to teammates checking you mid-queue, to communities vetting applicants, and to anyone deciding whether to accept a trade or a friend request.

Do commends expire?
No. Once a commend is on your profile it stays there. The counters only go up.
How to get them
The honest answer is: play well, be pleasant, and ask. Most people never commend anyone simply because they forget the screen exists. A short "commends?" at the end of a good match works more often than you would expect.
